What is a UK CAA Class 1 Medical?

The UK CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) Class 1 Medical Certificate is essential for pilots in the United Kingdom who wish to fly commercially under licences such as a Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL) and Airline Transport Pilots Licence (ATPL) – a commercial licence is required for those who fly for gain. This certification ensures pilots are medically fit for flying duties. Gaining a Class 1 Medical happens in two parts. The first part is called an initial medical, and this can only be conducted by an Aeromedical Centre (AMC) there is one in Birmingham and London. After you get your initial medical you can get a renewal carried out be any Class 1-rated AME. We can carry out Class 1 Renewals, we are applying to become an Aeromedical Centre, but this will take some time. Sign up to our newsletter to be the first to know.

What is a EASA Class 1 Medical?

The EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) Class 1 Medical Certificate fulfils the same purpose at the UK CAA medical for aspiring professional pilots within Europe. This certification process includes comprehensive health checks to ensure pilots are capable of safely operating an aircraft. The criteria cover vision, hearing, a general physical examination, heart rhythm analysis, lung function tests, neurological assessments, and potentially blood and urine tests, along with an ECG. Like the UK CAA Class 1 Medical, it must be obtained from authorized aviation medical examiners at approved centers, with regular renewals required to maintain the certification’s validity.

FAA Medicals

Similar to EASA and UK CAA, FAA is the American version of the medical standards. We are in the process of applying to carry out FAA medicals at GAP Clinic. Sign up to our newsletter to be the first to know when we are offering this service.

Which Medical Do I Need?

The medical you require depends on who is regulating you – it’s usually where your airline or company is based. For instance, if you are flying for Jet2 who are based in the UK, you will usually need a UK Class 1 Medical as they are regulated by the UK CAA. If you are flying with Ryanair, whose base is in Ireland and therefore regulated by EASA, you will need an EASA Class 1 Medical. You can hold both CAA & EASA medicals at once, this is something we are seeing an increasing number of our pilots doing. If you are unsure who regulates you and your company just ask and they will be able to let you know.

Class 1 Medical FAQs

The Class 1 Medical examination includes assessments of vision, hearing, a general physical examination, heart rhythm (ECG), lung function, and neurological health. It may also require blood and urine tests.
The first step is to register on the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s online portal, Cellma. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer initial Class 1 medical assessments, however, we do offer Class 1 medical renewals.

The renewal frequency depends on your age. For pilots under 40, the UK CAA and EASA require renewal every 12 months. For those 40 and older, more frequent renewals may be necessary, typically every 6 months for commercial pilots.

If you do not meet the required health standards, you may be referred for further evaluation or provided with restrictions on your medical certificate. In some cases, the certificate may be denied, but you have the right to appeal the decision or seek a second opinion from another authorized AME.

Dr Wallis is exactly what you would wish from a GP. He listens, he explains, he cares and is highly experienced. I have seen him when it has been impossible to see my GP, and could not have received better treatment. I will not hesitate to see him in the future. Thank you so much to the entire, lovely team..
