What is a Class 2 Medical?

A Class 2 medical is a thorough medical examination that is required by law to verify that a person is fit to operate a light aircraft under a Private Pilot Licence.

The medical examination involves a series of fitness, health, eyesight, and hearing tests, and takes roughly one hour to complete.

All Class 2 medical examinations, whether it is an initial Class 2 medical, or a renewal, must be undertaken by a registered Aeromedical Examiner (AME). At GAP Clinic, Dr A J Wallis is our AME, and he is supported by over 15 years of experience within the aviation medical industry.

How To Get a Class 2 Medical

When applying for a Class 2 medical, you are required to fill in a medical history application form known as a ‘MED160’, please find this on the Cellma Portal.

If you are attending Fit 2 Fly Medicals for your initial first medical then you will also need a Ophthalmology Medical Form known as a MED162, this is also available to download from Cellma and needs to be completed before your medical and an eye test carried out by your optician. Please also find a Letter to Optician to download and take along with you to make the process as quick and easy for you as possible.

Any forms that are applicable to your situation should be completed before you attend your medical with us.

Initial Class 2 Medicals & Renewals

Initial Medical

We can offer initial Class 2 medicals at GAP Clinic. An initial Class 2 medical involves an extended eye test which must be requested before you visit us, and is available from most opticians.

The MED162 form must be filled in by your optician and brought to your medical.

Please ensure you are also registered on Cellma, and you have filled in the MED160 “medical history” information online – this will require a processing payment to the CAA.

Renewal

Class 2 medical renewals are required every 5 years for those aged below 40, and every 2 years thereafter.

We offer all Class 2 medical renewals at GAP Clinic.

If you require an eye test for your renewal, please obtain this before you visit us for your renewal. MED162 forms are available from Cellma, and should be filled in by your optician.

If your medical history has changed, please ensure that it is updated on the Cellma Portal before your Class 2 renewal appointment.

CAA Registration

You MUST register on the CAA’s online portal (Cellma) and fill out the application before your preferred appointment date for us to proceed with a UK CAA medical.

Comprehensive guidelines are provided here:

Class 2 Medical FAQs

The Class 2 medical examination is comprehensive, typically lasting around an hour. It encompasses various assessments including:

  • Evaluation of medical history, encompassing family medical background, previous examination outcomes, and any history of being deemed unfit or having certificates suspended or revoked.
  • Physical examination.
  • Vision assessment, with the initial Class 2 exam featuring an extensive eye examination.
  • Hearing evaluation through conversation.
  • Urine analysis for blood, sugars, and protein.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG), which is mandated for the initial medical, the first checkup post turning 40, and subsequently every two years from age 50 unless clinically unnecessary.
  • Audiogram, required solely for pilots aiming for an instrument rating. The first audiogram is conducted before rating issuance, followed by renewals every five years prior to age 40, and then every 2 years thereafter.
  • Lung function, hemoglobin, and cholesterol blood tests performed only if clinically indicated.
Initial applicants must first register on the Cellma Portal and fill in a MED160 ‘medical history’ form online. There is a small processing fee that must be paid for this service.

You must also download a MED162 Ophthalmology Medical Form from Cellma that must be completed by a registered optician before your visit to us.

On the day of your visit, we will conduct the necessary examinations in order to assess your suitability for a Class 2 medical. Details will be given on the day of your appointment.

Class 2 medicals must be renewed every 5 years for applicants under the age of 40, and every 2 years thereafter.

If you do not meet the required health standards, you may be referred for further evaluation or provided with restrictions on your medical certificate.

In some cases, the certificate may be denied, but you have the right to appeal the decision or seek a second opinion from another authorized AME.

Dr Wallis is exactly what you would wish from a GP. He listens, he explains, he cares and is highly experienced. I have seen him when it has been impossible to see my GP, and could not have received better treatment. I will not hesitate to see him in the future. Thank you so much to the entire, lovely team..
